I did, actually! It happened very organically when I decided to begin teaching flamenco. I thought “Well, wouldn't it be great to turn this into an organization?” I had a few partners that were very enthusiastic about collaborating. In Pittsburgh, flamenco has brought together an amazing set of people over the years. There are people who have been coming to our shows for twenty years, literally. There are people who have been dancing with me for just as long, but there is always a set that might not have seen flamenco before. Some people approach me and say, “I've never seen anything like this, this is so amazing!” It really communicates that the show is good, when the artists are putting it all out there; it speaks to people. Last season, we set out to produce three events throughout the year, and we ended up doing eight! We're happy that we're able to do so much, and we're so grateful for all the funding and support that we received for this first season as a non-profit. Flamenco Pittsburgh provides a space for people not just to practice this art form, but also to engage, to belong, to find friends and people who are like-minded. We all resonate with the same art form, and would love for that experience to be available for others in the future.
